Wye Valley and Vale of Usk tourist guide - South Wales
The Wye Valley and Vale of Usk | Monmouth and Chepstow | Hay-on-Wye, Usk and Caldicot Abergavenny | Newport

Hay-on-Wye

The Wye Valley could not be written about without a mention of Hay-on-Wye, famous not only for the literary festivals held there throughout the world or its forty or so second-hand bookshops, but mainly for being home to the largest second-hand bookshop in the world, attracting visitors from far and wide.

Usk

Eponymously named after the river on which it sits, Usk is the place to visit for superb summer flower displays, fine antique, curio and craft shops and for the angler, possibly some of the finest salmon fishing in Wales. There is also a fine selection of cafes, restaurants and pubs catering to all tastes and cuisines. It is also noted for the popular Japan Ware which was made in the town in the 19th Century.

The town was the location for the largest Roman fort ever built in the UK, the ruins of which have been discovered beneath the town. The latterly built Usk Castle dates back to 11th Century Norman times, and is perhaps most famous for having been given by Henry VIII to his sixth wife Catherine Parr.

Caldicot

Another town featuring a fine Norman castle is Caldicot, although this castle, which sits magnificently in a wonderful woodland park, is perhaps most famous today for the traditional Medieval banquets held in the mighty banqueting hall where visitors have the option of travelling back to times past by wearing period clothing and 'acting' Medieval. It was only during the latter part of the 19th Century that the castle was transformed into a family residence.

The town marks an important route through Wales, as is seen by the nearby Severn Bridges crossing the river and the remains, just outside the town, of what was the largest settlement in Roman Wales, Venta Silurum.
