Wye and Usk Valley
In the south east corner of Wales, where England becomes Wales, the lovely Wye Valley and the Vale of Usk welcomes you with its diverse scenery and bustling towns. From the powerful Black Mountains in the north, to the marketplaces of Abergavenny and Monmouth in the centre, through to the rustic vales near Newport and Chepstow on the coast, Wye and Usk boasts a superb variety of accommodation. Whether you are a family with young children looking for a well-equipped holiday home with a family room, cot and high chair, or a couple looking for a secluded idyll with cosy log fires and oak beams, you can be sure to find the perfect place to stay. If you are an angler wanting to make the most of the area's splendid waterways, there are many fishing lodges near the Wye and Usk rivers and the Llandegfedd reservoir. Or stay around the coast at Newport and Chepstow where you can enjoy year-round sea-fishing and take home your catch of the day to cook in the traditional kitchen of your rustic holiday home. If you'd rather sample the region's growing reputation as a foodie's paradise, base yourself in one of the main towns and near pubs, restaurants and Wales' only Michelin starred restaurant, the Whitebrook, near Monmouth. For outdoor types, the Wye is one of the leading canoeing rivers in the UK.

For cycling, your cottage-owner will be able to advise you where you can hire a cycle and enjoy the quiet country lanes, great for family rides from your doorstep. There are more demanding mountain-bike routes at the Black Mountains, with its wild castles and rugged moorland. And the area also offers plenty of opportunities for horse riding, pony trekking and walking. For the fearless, see the dramatic Wye and Usk from hundreds of feet up at the hang gliding or paragliding centre in Abergavenny. There are many large holiday homes for rent and group accommodation in large farmhouses or beautifully converted barns which can sleep groups of 10 or more. Or larger groups can holiday in a castle - the beautiful Wye and Usk Valleys have the highest concentration of castles per square mile in the UK and the landscape is dotted with fortresses, including the evocative ruin of Tintern Abbey. There are lots of historic market towns to explore and you will find very nice old inns and cafes with a unique flavour of Welsh and English influences. Abergavenny is an historic bustling centre and has a food festival annually - the food shops are excellent which is a great attraction if you are on a self-catering holiday and want to eat great local produce. There are farmhouse kitchens with Aga ovens and Belfast sinks, as well as large pine tables and slate floors making cooking and dining a delightful part of your holiday.

Monmouth is a very historic market town and well worth a visit - and Newport, with its lovely floral displays, wetlands centre and continental markets, has so much to do and hundreds of beautifully maintained holiday cottages to choose from. If you wish to stay in pretty Hay-on-Wye during its famous book festival in August, you are advised to book early, but there are usually last minute holiday cottages to be had in the surrounding villages. This is a really lovely part of Wales, easily accessible, yet worlds apart.
