South Wales and Cardiff
South Wales is a lovely area for families, groups of friends or couples choosing self-catering holidays in South Wales. For seaside break, you'll do no better than the sublime 5 mile strand of Swansea Bay, where surfing is popular. Beachfront houses are available for large groups of 6, 7, 8 or more. Swansea, fringed by golden sands, with most shops, museums and restaurants only ten minutes from the beach makes a perfect location for couples wanting a weekend break. Luxury new apartments or an older house in the lively city gives you the best of both worlds in this city-by-the-sea. For a family seaside holiday, the enchanting village of Mumbles is a Victorian resort that holds the charms of a bygone era. There are coastguard cottages with seaviews near the impressive Pier, famous medieval fortress and renowned Italian ice cream parlours. Around the coast on the Gower Peninsula there are small cottages with luxury king size beds for couples looking for a romantic weekend away in an area of more than 50 uncrowded beaches and small inlets. Inland, groups of 12-15 people might find a barn conversion or a castle to rent in the unspoilt Vale of Neath which has the most stunning waterfalls in Wales. For a cycling holiday, some of the best mountain bike trails in Wales are in Afan Forest Park. This area has many converted farmhouses with character features, Aga ovens, and large dining tables which are perfect for holidays for larger families and groups on walking holidays. Cycle trails cover around 200 miles of what were mining areas - at Parc Bryn Bach near Tredegar a former colliery offers a thrilling selection of Mountain biking, kayaking, archery, climbing, quad biking, BMXing, golfing and gorge walking. There are plenty of large farmhouses and stunning barn conversions for groups of 8 or more in and around the park. Pretty villages with picturesque thatched cottages and real log fires are available in the Vale of Glamorgan. The Glamorgan Heritage Coast has ancient cliffs and great sandy beaches (Barry Island and Porthcawl have some of the best). There are plenty of cottages within walking distance from the sea so children can make the most of the long sandy beaches. Cardiff is a fantastic city, with its rich culture, inventive architecture and 149 pubs and bars and 73 restaurants, many dotted along its sparkling waterfront. There are lovely quirky flats and centrally located apartments to rent for a weekend away with friends.
