Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe with an ever changing coastline - from towering limestone headlands, curved scarlet red sandstone inlets, glacial valleys, golden sands and pretty harbours. The Pembroke coastal path hugs the edge of the land making this a popular part of Wales for a walking or cycling holiday. There are a great range of self-catering cottages to rent in many of the towns and villages. And dozens of bungalows and chalets near each of Pembrokeshire's numerous beaches, each with it's distinct identity. Waterbabes might like a maritime lodge near the pine-fringed crystal clear waters of Barrafundle which have been likened to the Caribbean. The black sands of Aberieddi with its millions of tiny fossils and Blue Lagoon are fascinating for its nature-lovers, who can stay near the shoreline. While the pebblestrewn Aber Bach is wonderful for a couple staying in a romantic holiday cottage - from your window you may spot seals playing in the surf, or maybe even a mermaid!
The Pembrokeshire coast is particularly popular for a family holiday, and it has a good selection of holiday homes suitable for 6 , 7, 8 or more, many equipped with highchairs, cots, bunkbeds and stair-guards for your convenience and flexibility. Rent a seaside cottage a stone's throw from small pretty coves where young explorers can play in rock pools and grottos of purple-grey stone. The charming town of Tenby is one of area's must-sees and among the prettiest seaside towns in the UK. With its intact Norman wall, its labyrinth of tiny streets and eccentric shops it exudes a quaintness and charm that will make you want to linger. Fortunately it has a fine selection snug rustic cottages with slate floors and oak beams which fit the bill. There are some cosy pubs and really romantic, gourmet restaurants in Tenby and for couples looking for an amorous break, the area has gorgeous maritime cottages perched on the narrow streets, a short distance from the fishing boats at the bustling harbour. For a family holiday, Tenby's dune-edged beach with one and a half miles of gently shelving sands provides a perfect playground for children and the snaking streets also contain larger Victorian holiday homes, thoughtfully equipped with all the modern conveniences needed to make a great self-catering vacation.
If you fancy a real hideaway, a number of tiny islands lie off the coast, Skomer, a wildlife paradise with lovely secluded bays and lichen covered sheer cliffs where gulls and cormorants nest. The centre of the island has self-catering bunkhouses that can sleep up to 15 people in 5 rooms, making an unforgettable holiday for nature-lovers and walkers alike. Inland lie the Preseli Hills with fascinating prehistoric sites and open walking amidst meadows and big horizons. Fishguard, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest are also ideally placed to explore Pembrokeshire - a self-catering cottage offers you the freedom to do your own thing, particularly if you are on holiday with children. Saundersfoot nestles round a pretty bay with a great harbour and St David's (with its lovely cathedral) is Britain's smallest city. Both have some charming character cottages in the village many of which are thoughtfully decorated with luxurious bedding, deep comfortable sofas, and woodburning stoves. Couples will enjoy a holiday cottage just a romantic stroll from St David's beautiful natural harbour, where little boats bob in the clear water. There are holiday homes for larger groups of 12+ on an activity holiday, ideally placed for Pembrokeshire's stunning headland where abseiling, kayaking and bouldering are popular activities. The market town of Pembroke is a bustling place with an amazing castle and the many endearing towns and villages around offer a fine choice of cottages, farmhouses, barns and castles where you can relax, and refuel and kick back after experiencing some of the awe-inspiring sites that Pembrokeshire has to offer.
