North East Wales
With atmospheric ruins, tiny hamlets, mediaeval towns and otherworldy forests, rivers and meadows, this beautiful corner of North East Wales makes an unparalleled holiday or short break. For walkers, there are an abundance of glorious trails and many holiday cottages to rent where you can enjoy walking from the doorstep. At the centre, the Clwydian Range is home to some rare wildlife and after exploring its hefty climbs and elevated heathland you'll happily collapse in one of the sympathetically converted farmhouses to rent. There are holiday homes to let in the lovely town of Llangollen, charmingly situated near the steep forested inclines of the Horseshoe Pass where the gushing River Dee guides walkers to the town. Further on, another good base is the compact settlement of Corwen where a good warm bath and a deep sofa by the cosy fireside will ease aching limbs after a long trek. Recently renovated cottages are also available near many of the splendidly maintained golf courses where you can have a round against the spectacular backdrop of the North Wales countryside. There are magnificent barn conversions near the shores of the Dee Estuary, where you will find the 13th Century Flint Castle, one of the many heritage sites in an area that is rich with history.

The North Wales Borderlands are also full of heavenly gardens, easily accessible from one of the self-catering homes. North East Wales has many things to please the adventurous - and help with booking activities is often available through your cottage owners - indoor karting and ice-skating, clay-pigeon shooting, kayaking and cycling are all on offer, but, for unmatched excitement, take a canal boat trip across the Dee Acquaduct, hundreds of feet above the river. If retail therapy is more your thing, the area's largest shopping town, Wrexham makes a great base with plenty of cafes to rest up and inspect your purchases. There are plenty of Welsh self-catering apartments and family homes within easy reach of this lively city. The charming market town of Mold is also a popular place to stay with its an abundance of craft and curiosity shops, teahouses and farmers markets selling local organic produce. You'll find something for everyone in this charming part of the country - a holiday cottage in North East Wales is a richly rewarding holiday.
