Old Rectory Stables
Gilwern, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire

Welsh holiday cottage location 5 star Welsh Tourist board

Old Rectory Stables is one of two stunning WTB 5-starred cottages in the beautiful 16th century Old Rectory Barn. Situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, both the Stables and the Loft have been renovated to an extremely high standard with exposed beams, lots of light and a lovely garden-patio area to take advantage of the views across the valley. The Stables can accommodate 4, while the Loft is designed for groups of 4-6. Independently, each cottage makes a wonderful place for a holiday retreat, while together, they are a fantastic holiday let for a family celebration or group accommodation for up to 10 people.

Old Rectory Stables provides opportunities for walking in all directions amidst ever-changing landscape. From undulating hills and valleys, quaint market towns, large expanses of open land dotted with boulders and rugged caves and waterfalls, this is an area of unsurpassed beauty - perfect for a walking, painting or photography holiday in Wales.

The nearest village to The Stables is Gilwern which has a small shop and 4 pubs, some of which serve food. There is also an excellent fish and chip shop! For lovers of good food, there's a superb choice of eateries, including the 2007 and 2008 Wales Restaurants of the Year and the famous Bear Hotel in Crickhowell, a pretty market town just 10 minutes drive. If you want to prepare a romantic or family meal back at your lovely self-catering cottage then this is a good place to stock up on Welsh produce.

The barn conversion makes really good base for a child-friendly holiday in Wales. There are plenty of activities for children - horseriding in Crickhowell, family cycling along the Monmouthshire - Brecon canal or a fun ride on a vintage locomotive on the Brecon Mountain Railway which snakes through some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain. It's convenient for touring nearby market towns - Abergavenny hosts craft fairs and antiques markets and is home to the Motte and Bailey Castle, one of the finest examples of its kind. There's the Linda Vista gardens where rare orchids and stunning views provide a lovely place to picnic. Historic Monmouth's beautiful multi-arched stone bridge and well-preserved Tudor houses will transport you back in time. And Brecon, only 14 miles from the holiday cottage, is well served with a cinema, theatre, cathedral and supermarket and a wonderful covered market selling top quality produce.

For adrenaline junkies a fabulous way to enjoy the abundance of pulse-raising activities in the Brecon Beacons - hang-gliding and paragliding tuition, canoeing, kayaking, rockclimbing and abseiling - is to rent the Stables and the Loft together for group accommodation. A range of 18 hole golf courses will satisfy golfers, while anglers have plenty of scope for casting out on the canal as well as the River Usk. On rainy days, bowling, squash and indoor swimming are all a short drive from this five star holiday cottage.

After making the most of all these activities, have a hot shower, kick back and take a book out to the private balcony where you can enjoy the timeless tranquility of your surroundings.
